Oslo, Norway – May 18, 2021 – Smartoptics, a leading provider of optical networking solutions, partnered with Miradot to sign an agreement with IT Norbotten to upgrade the regional Swedish operator’s transport network. The new solution is based on Smartoptics’ open line system and gives IT Norrbotten the flexibility it was looking to develop a future-proof regional network.

IT Norrbotten, a company co-owned by Norrbotten’s 14 municipalities and Region Norrbotten, offers an open fiber-based high-speed network spanning all of Norrbotten County. The network interconnects all of the participating municipalities’ primary nodes, serving industry, public service and other regional operators. To meet the capacity and quality requirements of owners and customers, IT Norrbotten decided to upgrade its network capacity to 100G. The new solution delivered by Miradot is based on the Smartoptics DCP-R product family, a ROADM solution offering high network flexibility.

“When upgrading our wavelength network to 100G, our goal was to find a cost-effective solution that met our capacity requirements while also delivering the flexibility and openness that are decisive for us. That is precisely what the Smartoptics open line system gives us: a future-proof solution without vendor lock-in. The flexibility and dedication shown by both Miradot and Smartoptics met our expectations every step of the way,” says Greger Björk, Business Area Manager Network & Infrastructure at IT Norrbotten.

The solution enables IT Norrbotten to upgrade its network gradually with an initial focus on the parts of the region with the greatest need for increased capacity. Installation of the high-capacity network will commence in February.

“Openness is a high priority for us at Smartoptics. Our open line systems, of which the ROADM family is an important part, are designed to offer a stable foundation for flexible and cost-effective optical networking solutions. By choosing these solutions to upgrade its regional network, IT Norrbotten has demonstrated how our offering appeals to network operators,” says Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO of Smartoptics.

“A great degree of expertise, experience and close collaboration between us and Smartoptics has gone into laying a foundation for the best possible technical solution and an excellent customer experience. This project is a testament to an effective concept,” says Marcus Lind, CEO of Miradot.
