New flexible and compact ROADM strengthens Smartoptics’ offering for larger fiber optic networks
Oslo, Norway – March 20, 2024 – Smartoptics, a leading provider of optical networking solutions, today announced the launch of a groundbreaking new ROADM, opening up the capability to build larger metro and regional networks. This expands the company’s market opportunities. The ROADM, called DCP-R-34D-CS, only takes up 1 rack unit (RU) and supports disaggregated networking.
"With the DCP-R-34D-CS, we are revolutionizing the landscape of optical networking. Smartoptics has a clear goal to establish a position in larger metro and regional networks. This product meets several in-demand use cases in metro and regional networks of all sizes, making our offering more relevant for this attractive segment. This is because the new ROADM empowers network operators with the tools they need to build and manage a wide variety of advanced network architectures with high flexibility and cost efficiency,” says Kent Lidström, Chief Technology Officer of Smartoptics.
Reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) are a technology providing dynamic wavelength routing capabilities in a fiber optic network. The DCP-R-34D-CS provides broad interoperability and the latest Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) technology for flexibly managing next generation disaggregated networks. All ports are equipped with flex grid support and enable seamless cross-connect and add-drop functionality in the local node. All of this offers great flexibility and future-proof adaptability for metro and regional networks and is well suited for use with IP over DWDM.
Space and energy efficient
The DCP-R-D34-CS only takes up 1 RU of rack space and consumes less than 100W of power per direction. This small space and energy footprint makes the ROADM a sustainable choice. Both cost-efficient and high-performance operation is ensured with Smartoptics' CDC-F technology. With the new ROADM’s variable gain amplifiers, network performance can be further optimized across a wide variety of operating scenarios.
"Combined with our innovative SoSmart management suite, which leverages modern and open data models based on Netconf and OpenROADM, the DCP-R-34D-CS delivers unparalleled simplicity and efficiency in network management. The ROADM has everything needed to be a key building block in networks leveraging IP over DWDM. This new innovation marks a significant milestone in our mission to drive innovation and empower network operators worldwide,” Lidström emphasizes.
