Smartoptics addresses the needs of metro/regional network operators by adding ROADM capabilities to its xWDM Flexible Open Line Systems
Oslo, Norway– September 16, 2020 – Smartoptics, a leading provider of optical networking systems today announced the expansion of its xWDM Flexible Open Line Systems portfolio to directly address the needs of metro and regional optical network operators. Based on the generic Dynamic Connectivity Platform (DCP), the new DCP-R family is optimized for use in any type of ROADM-based network at speeds up to 400G. The new DCP-F family provides a versatile set of active optical units that can be used in various configurations or to extend the functionality of other DCP products. To further simplify its integration in metro and regional networks, Smartoptics also introduces a complete software suite for SDN-based management of the DCP-R family.
Smartoptics has from the beginning recognized the benefits of open architectures for optical networks. With an open architecture the functionality of once monolithic optical transport systems can be disaggregated, using embedded transceivers, open line systems and Software Defined Networking (SDN) control, resulting in optimal price/performance. The benefits of open optical networking have already been leveraged for Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and other point-to-point applications, but open line systems are now increasingly also being required by operators for metro and regional networks with ring and mesh topologies.
To meet the diverse requirements of active open line systems, Smartoptics has introduced the Dynamic Connectivity Platform (DCP), supporting the optical networking needs of both enterprises and operators. The already existing DCP-M family is optimized for zero touch provisioning of point-to-point links and it is now complemented by the DCP-R family of ROADMs and the DCP-F family of active optical building blocks. In addition, Smartoptics introduces a complete and open software suite including SDN Controller, Graphical User Interface (GUI) and path calculation tool for the management of the DCP-R family according to the principles of the Open ROADM MSA.
Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO Smartoptics, commented: “Smartoptics has already proven the value of open optical networking to many DCI customers all around the world. We are also experiencing a strong interest from many operators that want to use an open line system and embedded transceivers in their metro and metro access networks. With the new DCP-F and DCP-R families and with our open and SDN-based management suite, Smartoptics has expanded its offering to also serve these new customers.”
