AeroShot Will Be Reviewed by the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration is planning to review the newinhalable caffeine product, called AeroShot, to determine if it is safe for consumers to ingest and if its maker can accurately market it as a dietary supplement.

According to Fox News, AeroShot did not initially require an FDA review because it was sold as a dietary supplement. However, after Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) raised concerns about the product’s safety, a review of the product was reconsidered.

AeroShot hit the market last month in New York and Massachusetts and is also available in France. Each canister is about the size of a lipstick tube and is meant to be breathed in by the user, which releases a fine powder that contains 100 milligrams of caffeine as well as vitamin B.

While the creator David Edwards, a Harvard biomedical engineering professor, contends that the product is safe, Schumer says "I am worried about how a product like this impacts kids and teens, who are particularly vulnerable to overusing a product that allows one to take hit after hit after hit, in rapid succession."
