Alere Expands Recall on Heart Attack and Drug Tests

Alere Inc. is expanding last month’s recall of heart attack tests to include another 897,000 units due to quality control issues. The expansion doubles the number of products recalled by the company, according to the Boston Globe.

The new recall includes 650,000 tests used to manage heart failure and diagnose heart attacks as well as 247,000 Triage Tox tests used by hospitals to identify 11 drugs, such as cocaine, acetaminophen, and marijuana, reports to the Globe.

The tests were recalled because a recent inspection found they did not meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quality guidelines. The company said it is in discussion with the FDA to determine the final requirements so it can release new products by the end of the year, according to the Globe.
