Amidst raising concerns in the medical device industry that products such as hip and knee replacements may cause injury or pain, yet another unsafe medical device has made headlines—artificial thumb implants.

In a report by the Telegraph, Andrea Kon describes her painful experience with the Artelon CMC Spacer, which is a T-shaped medical device made out of a “unique biomaterial that supports the body’s ability to heal,” according to its manufacturer Artimplant.

Kon states that following her surgery, she found herself in agonizing pain for months. This prompted her to search the Internet for related experiences. She found that since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensed the device in 2004, there have been many reports of patients experiencing swelling and pain. There have also been reports of the device breaking inside the hand.

Some patients have initiated lawsuits against Artimplant for use of its unsafe medical device. Kon eventually had surgery to remove the Artelon Spacer implant and is now pain free.
