Baby Bathers Recalled for Fall Hazard

More than two million baby bath seats were recalled by Summer Infant Inc. after reports that children could fall and sustain head injuries.

Summer Infant voluntarily recalled its Mother’s Touch/Deluxe Baby Bathers in the United States and Canada following reports of at least seven incidents including five in which babies suffered head injuries after tumbling out of the bathers, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

Four children between two weeks and two months old received skull fractures, including one that required intensive care for bleeding on the brain. The fifth child received a bump to the head requiring emergency room treatment.

The bather can cause injury when carried with a child in it because the folding wire frame can disengage from the side hinge, which may result in a fall and cause serious head injury.

The recall is for Summer Infant baby bathers with a small, square plastic base that may be pink or blue in color and measure 13 ½ inches long by 12 ½ inches wide. The bathers were manufactured in China. Those made since 2007 come with a warning “Never lift or carry the bather with an infant in it”. The product was sold nationwide from September 2004 to November 2011.

Consumers have been advised to stop using the product and contact Summer Infant for a free repair kit.
