Bereaved Pet Owners Join Fight Against Jerky Treats

One consumer whose dog died this past May after allegedly eating tainted Chinese-made chicken jerky treats is taking matters into her own hands.

Among other things, she launched a Change.org petition last month calling for stores to pull the products voluntarily, according to NBC News. The petition now has more than 60,000 signatures.

The petition reflects the frustration felt by thousands of pet owners across the U.S., some of whom have taken it upon themselves to warn others about the potentially hazardous treats in the face of what they say is too little action by regulators or the industry to pull the products.

NBC News writes that retailers and manufacturers of the treats - as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - say that there is no connection between the products and pet harm although the FDA’s investigation is ongoing. There have been 2,200 reports of illnesses and more than 300 animal deaths attributed to the treats since 2007.

Several product liability lawsuits are currently pending against manufacturers and sellers of the jerky treats.
