Bubble tea may be delicious but is it safe?

German health authorities and researchers have expressed doubts about the safety of the trendy drink stating that it may contain cancer-causing chemicals and that the tapioca pearls or “bubbles” may also pose a choking hazard for children, according to Yahoo News.

After analyzing the samples collected from a chain outlet in Germany, researchers from the University Hospital Aachen concluded that the beverage posed a safety risk as the bubbles contained polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) such as styrene, acetophenone, and brominated products.

Separately, Dr. Andreas Hensel of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment said that bubble tea posed a potential choking hazard as the bubbles, when sucked through a straw, could enter the lungs and cause complications especially in children.

Bubble tea is a trendy beverage that originated in Taiwan and is growing in popularity in Europe and the US.
