The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating an unusual outbreak of E. coli in six states, which has been linked to 13 illnesses and one death of a child.

The CDC said it has not linked the outbreak, which occurred in April and May, to contaminated food or other causes, according to the Associated Press.

The strain of E. coli identified in the outbreak is the 0145, which health officials have been conducting tests on only since 2009.

Symptoms of E. coli infections include fever, bloody stools, and fatigue.
