Class Action Lawsuits Likely After BP Gas Recall

Oil giant BP’s gas recall woes seem to be increasing with each and every passing day. Two Indiana-based law firms now plan to file a joint class-action product liability lawsuit against the company over last week’s recall.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that shortly after recalling 2.1 million gallons of gas due to the presence of gunk, BP received more than 10,000 customer complaints alleging that the defective product caused problems in ignition, engine bogs, vibrations and rough driving, rough idling, and illumination of the "service engine" light.

The majority of the gas was regular grade and sold from Aug. 13- 20 at about 200 gas stations in northwest Indiana and the Chicago area. The faulty gasoline contains a tar-like residue that can gum up spark plugs, fuel injectors, and intake and exhaust valves, according to the Journal Sentinel.

BP said last week it will reimburse customers for their fuel and for fuel-related repairs. However, the law firms that filed suit claim that customers have had difficulties reaching the company to pursue potential reimbursement.
