Colorful Detergent Pods Pose New Hazard for Kids

Single-use laundry detergent pods are emerging as a new household safety hazard for young children who can mistake the colorful packets for candy and eat them.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers says there have been nearly 3,000 incidents of kids under the age of five swallowing the detergent pods and suffering injuries – or about 13 cases daily, according to Today.com.

Swallowing the pods may cause vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, and respiratory problems. Some children who ate them required hospitalization and a ventilator.

Today.com reports that the pods contain detergent in concentrated form, which makes them particularly dangerous for toddlers to ingest.

Manufacturers such as Tide and Purex created the concentrated packets as a time-saving solution for parents as there is no need for pouring or measuring and they directly dissolve in water.
