CPSC Warns About Rise in Summer ATV Deaths
So far, 2012 has seen the deaths of 130 adults and 28 children in ATV-related incidents. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning ATV riders about the increased risk of injury and death associated with summertime riding and urging them to stay safe on the trails. The CPSC notes there were 14 adult deaths and three involving children during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
To help ATV riders, the CPSC issued safety guidelines to make riding a safe and fun experience. The government’s advice includes:
- Ride only after getting vehicle training
- Always wear protective gear
- Never allow more people on any ATV than the vehicle was designed to carry
- Do not ride on paved roads
The most important guideline? Don’t allow children under 6 to ride on an ATV -- and don’t allow those younger than 16 to drive one.
The CPSC has seen an alarming number of deaths due to ATV accidents. During 2004-2006, the number of children’s deaths increased by 65% during March and April; that figure rose to 85% for adults during the same period. The number of deaths rises during the summer and peaks in July.
