E.coli Alert Issued for Canadian Beef Products

A public health alert was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for beef products from Canada-based XL Foods Inc. that may be tainted with E.coli.

Raw boneless beef trim product from XL Foods was tested by FSIS and was positive for E.coli O157:H7, a potentially deadly bacterium that causes bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and even kidney failure. People with weak immune systems, infants, and elderly are at highest risk.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was informed and subsequently, it announced a recall. FSIS reports that a variety of ground beef products by XL Foods were recalled.

The products subject to the Canadian food product recall were distributed to U.S. establishments in California, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. These products may have made into products such as ground beef, burger patties, and beef jerky.

According to FSIS, U.S. customers are being notified by the company of the recall and efforts are being made to ensure that all beef trim received at FSIS-inspected establishments from Canadian Establishment 38 received a full lethality treatment or that no raw trim was further distributed and manufactured into other not-ready-to-eat products.

FSIS is also taking action to ensure that raw ground meat products produced from the recalled trim are removed from the market.

The public is advised to consume ground beef only if it has been cooked to a temperature of 160° F.
