Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has issued a global voluntary recall of more than 500  lots of its Proximate PPH and HCS hemorrhoidal circular surgical staplers and accessories, that have been reported to have firing issues such as difficulty in firing and partial firing of staples.

According to a Mass Device report, the devices have been reported to have problems in firing, which may result in an incomplete firing stroke and subsequently, an incomplete or partial staple formation. Incidents where surgeons have not been able to squeeze the firing trigger have also been reported.

The voluntary recall notice was conducted with the full knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The federal agency’s adverse event reporting system has listed scores of complaints regarding Proximate surgical staplers. All healthcare practitioners have been asked to return the affected devices by November 5.
