Fat-Melting Device May Be Overlooked by the FDA

An investigation by FairWarning reveals that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may be overlooking a potentially dangerous medical device promoted in medical spas across the country as an innovative way for consumers to lose body fat.

The fat-melting device is called the LipoTron 3000, or Lipo-Ex, and it is manufactured by RevecoMED International. It works by passing radiofrequency waves through the body to heat, and destroy fat cells, according to FairWarning. The medical spas that use these devices recommend that consumers purchase six to eight treatments at about $400 per treatment.

The FairWarning investigation found that the device was never approved by the FDA, which means it is illegal under federal law to sell or market it for weight loss. The probe also found that the FDA has known about the activity since January 2010 when two whistleblowers came forward but it has yet to take action to enforce the law.
