Federal Regulators Expand Jeep Fire Probe

Chrysler is immersed in a fire that it cannot put out as U.S. safety regulators have expanded a probe into 23 reports of fires in the company’s Jeep Wrangler SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) does not know what caused the fires, but requested information from Chrysler on Wranglers from 2007-2012 model years. When the investigation started on March 28, it focused on SUVs from the 2010 model year and the NHTSA said it received 23 complaints about fires from six model years, according to the Associated Press.

In those incidents, two homes were damaged, three people suffered minor burns, and four people were injured.

The agency is now focusing on electrical wiring and overheated transmission fluid as possible reasons for the fires.

Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs from model years 1993-2004 were also investigated for the safety of their gas tank placement following a fatal crash.
