Flame Retardants May Pose a Safety Hazard

Flame retardant makers mounted a misinformation campaign to spark demand for their products even as studies showed that the chemicals present significant health risks and provide minimal fire protection, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Tribune’s investigative report found that the industry attempted to downplay the risks posed by fire retardants by engaging in misleading tactics. These tactics included overstating the benefits of flame retardant chemicals, creating a fake consumer watchdog group, and organizing a group of high-ranking fire officials to champion use of the chemicals.

Flame retardant chemicals are used in a variety of products from children’s toys and clothing to electronics and furniture. Proponents say they help save lives by reducing fire risk.

However, some of the chemicals have also been linked to cancer, developmental issues, fertility problems, and neurological deficits. And government research into fire retardant foam in furniture shows that it provides negligible protection from fire.
