Ford issued a recall for about 485,000 Escape and Maverick vehicles due to throttle issues that may lead to car accidents.

The recall affects vehicles from model years 2001 through 2004 that are powered by 3-liter V-6 engines with cruise control, according to the Associated Press (AP). Gas pedals in the vehicles are vulnerable to sticking if the cruise control cables snag on the plastic cover atop the engine.

The recall comes on the heels of an investigation by U.S. safety regulators of Escape small SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received 68 complaints about the problem including reports of nine injuries, 13 crashes, and one death of a teenage girl, according to the AP.
