Ford Recalls Escape and Fusion Over Engine Fires

Over 89,000 new Escape SUVs and Fusion sedans from the 2013 model year have been recalled by Ford Motor Co. over reports of engine fires.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that Ford said that the engines can overheat and leak fluids onto hot parts and cause fires. The company is investigating the reasons behind the overheating problem.

So far there have been 12 fires reported in Escapes and one in a Fusion but no one has been injured to date.

The Ford recall involves cars with the SE and SEL packages and 1.6-liter turbocharged engines, which were sold in the U.S. and Canada. It affects around 73,000 Escapes and 16,000 Fusions. Models with different engines don't have the problem and are not involved in the recall, reports AP.

The cars can still be driven, but owners whose dashboard warning lights come on should immediately pull off the road and turn off the engine and leave the vehicle, according to the company.

It's the fourth recall in four months for the new Escape, a top-selling model for Ford in the compact SUV segment. The 2013 version went on sale in the spring, and it has already had problems with coolant leaks, cracked fuel lines, and carpet padding, reports AP.

The company is working on a solution and has asked owners to contact dealers, who will arrange for loaner cars at no charge until the repairs are made.
