Forever Cheese Recalls Ricotta Due To Listeria

Three people were hospitalized and fourteen others have fallen ill after eating ricotta cheese tainted with listeria.

Forever Cheese issued a voluntary recall for the imported Ricotta Salata Frescolina cheese, which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have linked to illnesses in 11 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Associated Press (AP). Government health officials believe the cheese may also be linked to at least one death.

Listeriosis is treatable with antibiotics and symptoms include diarrhea, muscle aches, and abdominal pains. Those with compromised immunity, as well as expectant mothers, infants, and the elderly are at a high risk of the infection proving fatal.

The Baltimore Sun reports a specific lot of the recalled product was sold to retailers and restaurants in Washington, D.C., and 18 states from June 20 to Aug 9. The lot number for the recalled product is T9425 and the production code is 441202.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administrator (FDA) along with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention are investigating the recalled product.
