A cantaloupe recall issued by Burch Equipment LLC has been expanded to include cantaloupes grown this season and honeydew melons because of a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The FDA website describes the Listeria monocytogenes as a bacterial organism that can cause fatal diseases in elderly individuals and children, miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women, and headaches and nausea in young children. It also can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Most of the cantaloupes being recalled can be identified by their red label. Even though some of the fruit comes from Burch Farms, some of the affected cantaloupes have a Cottle Strawberry, Inc sticker on them.

The concerned Honeydews and Cantaloupes were sold to distributors in 18 states between June 23 and July 27.FDA officials have asked customers to discard the recalled products, and added that no one had been harmed by the contamination.
