Gel Pack Maker Triples Product Recall

California Innovations Inc. voluntarily tripled the quantity of products included in a recent recall of its gel packs.

The recall is being increased for the Cryofreeze ice/hot packs, Cryofreeze Transparent Cell ice/hot packs, and the Arctic Zone ice gel packs to include about 880,000 packs. The packs - which are manufactured in China - may leak gel containing diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol if they are damaged, according to Occupational Health and Safety. The chemicals could cause consumers to fall ill if ingested in large amounts, says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

There have been no reports of adverse events linked to the recalled products.

The gel packs were sold throughout the nation at mass warehouse and merchandise stores, distributors, and retailers from July 2007 through December 2008.
