Ground Beef Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

An outbreak of food poisoning that sickened 33 people in seven states has prompted Cargill Meat Solutions to recall nearly 30,000 pounds of ground beef products.        

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the 29,339 pounds of 85% lean ground beef produced on May 25 by Cargill is thought to be contaminated with Salmonella enteritidis. The agency became aware of the problem during its ongoing investigation of the multi-state outbreak.

The products being recalled include 14 pound chub packages of “Grnd Beef Fine 85/15,” packed 3 chubs to approximate 42-pound cases. Since the products are no longer available for retail sale, the FSIS is most concerned that the frozen products may be in the possession of consumers. The meat had been shipped to distribution centers in Connecticut, Maine, and New York for further distribution.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can be life threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as the elderly and infants, as well as people with HIV or those undergoing chemotherapy.
