Hair Straigteners Pose Danger to Children

Doctors in the UK are warning consumers about the increase in burn injuries associated with electric hair straighteners, also known as flat irons.

The products reach temperatures as high as 230 degrees and can leave children with severe burns that may leave scars for life. They have become the third most common cause of burns to kids after hot drinks and food, according to The Telegraph.

A burn unit at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol has treated 110 children over the last five years who were burned by flat irons. Hospital staff says that many more suffer these types of burns but do not need treatment from a hospital.

Doctors are urging parents to turn off the straighteners right after use, put them in heat-resistant pouches, and never leave them lying around.
