Iowa Egg Farm Tests Positive for Salmonella

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered the bacteria Salmonella Heidelberg during a routine inspection of barns at a production facility belonging to Centrum Valley Farms, which vowed to keep the Iowa egg industry salmonella-free after a nationwide outbreak of the deadly disease in 2010.

Salmonella causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps, food poisoning, and fever within days of consuming the contaminated product and it can be fatal in certain cases.

The company told the Associated Press (AP) that the presence of the bacteria in the barns did not mean any eggs were unsafe; nevertheless, the company held product from the market until the eggs had tested negative for the bacteria four times and were approved for sale by the FDA.

Centrum Valley Farms had taken over the management of the facility from egg magnate Jack DeCoster with a declaration to improve the conditions there after a 2010 salmonella outbreak that prompted the recall of 500 million eggs, according to the AP.

The FDA has given Centrum Valley 15 working days to issue a response that indicates that the company has taken adequate steps for prevention of the recurrence of a salmonella outbreak.
