Jeep and Ram Vehicles Probed for Safety Issues

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Chrysler’s Ram pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs for safety problems.

Documents posted on the NHTSA’s website indicate that the rear wheels of 2009 and 2010 Rams have a tendency to lock, which could lead to crashes, according to the Associated Press (AP). The documents also indicate that steering fluid hoses of 2012 Cherokees can leak and cause engine fires.

The NHTSA began the investigation after receiving about 12 complaints from Ram owners about locking wheels. Drivers said they were traveling at a speed of 35 mph or faster when the wheels locked and caused them to lose control, according to the AP.

The agency also received two reports of fires and one report of a power steering hose failure for the Grand Cherokees. The complaints of fires were reported last month and claimed the vehicles were destroyed as a result.

There were no injuries reported from any of the safety issues.
