The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is intensifying its probe of Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs after reports of nearly 24 fires after rear-impact crashes.

The NHTSA said it upgraded the investigation and added Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Liberty models with fuel tanks behind the rear axle to an engineering analysis, according to Bloomberg News. The agency said that the fires may have caused at least 46 injuries and 15 deaths.

No recalls have been issued over the issue under investigation but such upgrades sometimes end in one, writes Bloomberg.

The probe includes Jeep Grand Cherokees from model years 1993 to 2001, Jeep Liberties from 2002 to 2007, and Jeep Cherokees from 1993 to 2001.

Although the company does not know how many of the 5.1 million vehicles being probed are still on the road, a spokesperson told Bloomberg, “We believe the vehicles are safe and that a detailed engineering analysis will bear that out.”
