Jerky Treat Complaints Continue to Rise

Complaints over tainted doggy treats from China have nearly doubled over the last five years but government officials have yet to pinpoint a cause for the illnesses after years of lab testing.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted summaries of lab results from nearly 300 jerky treat samples collected and analyzed in the U.S. between April 2007 and June 2012, according to NBC News. The agency tested for toxins such as mold, chemicals used in antifreeze, and plastics and resins that are harmful to animals.

Out of the 284 samples included in the new data, only six showed adverse findings according to NBC. Salmonella, mold, and low levels of melamine were found in various samples of products including Dingo and Waggin Train chicken jerky products as well as Del Monte beef flavor jerky treats.

The FDA issued three warnings about jerky treats since 2007 with the most recent one being in November 2011.
