LipoTron Comes Under Fire

A consumer advocacy group filed a complaint with the Medical Board of California alleging that the use of the LipoTron for weight loss is endangering patients.

The complaint filed by Public Citizen claims that Dr. Gail Altschuler and other doctors are using the LipoTron for fat reduction when the product hasn’t been approved by federal regulators for that use, according toNorth Country Times.

RevecoMED is registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make the low-risk therapeutic massager known as the LipoTron. However, the machine is not approved by the FDA for weight loss-related uses.

Public Citizen’s complaint was filed in an effort to prevent the use of the LipoTron for weight loss until it undergoes additional regulatory scrutiny.

Dr.  Altschuler told North Country Times it is common for physicians to use medical devices or pharmaceuticals “off label” for purposes not explicitly sanctioned by the FDA as long as the patient is informed that the process is not FDA-approved and gives consent.
