Metal Hip Replacements Deemed Unsafe by UK Surgeons

While some in the medical world contend that metal-on-metal hip replacements are still safe to use, The British Hip Society is saying that the hip replacements are dangerous and should no longer be implanted into patients.

According to BBC News, the society believes that patients should not use the metal-on-metal hip replacements because there is not enough evidence showing that the benefits outweigh the risks.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) insists that the implants are safe, but also recently announced that the implants should be monitored annually for life rather than the original recommendation of just five years.

"We recognize that there is emerging evidence of increased revision rates associated with large head metal-on-metal hip replacements. But the clinical evidence is mixed and this does not support their removal from the market. Metal-on-metal resurfacing hip implants enable young patients to lead pain-free, independent lives,” says Dr Susanne Ludgate, clinical director of the MHRA.
