MHRA Updates Advice for Metal Hip Replacements

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued updated advice about a type of metal-on-metal hip replacement, informing surgeons that the implants must be monitored every year of the hip replacement’s life.

According to the MHRA, the new advice updates previous guidelines that advised doctors to monitor the hip replacements for a minimum of five years. The agency set up an expert advisory group, which provided the evidence for the update, to look at patient management with soft tissue swelling that was linked to the hip implants.

The new advice is meant to decrease the risk of patients having to have additional surgery to correct complications.

Metal-on-metal hip implants have been found to have high failure rates on many different occasions by U.S. researchers.
