New Hot Coffee Lawsuit Brewing for McDonald's

McDonald’s may be burnt by hot coffee again.

The fast-food giant faces a new hot coffee lawsuit, nearly two decades after it was famously sued over a scalding cup of java that left a New Mexico woman with burns that required skin grafts. This time the victim is a 4-year-old girl who allegedly sustained serious burns and scarring after a McDonald’s employee handed her a cup of hot coffee, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Mona Abdelal, the child’s grandmother, filed a product liability lawsuit against McDonald’s claiming an employee refilled a cup of coffee for her granddaughter without securing the lid or warning the child about the hot liquid. The complaint claims that the server also failed to wait for the coffee to cool down or place a cardboard holder on the cup.

As a result, a considerable amount of hot coffee spilled on the child’s chest causing second-degree burns and permanent scarring, according to the lawsuit. Abdelal allegedly suffered first-degree burns on her a finger when she tried to help her granddaughter.

The complaint states that McDonald’s violated its policy of not serving coffee to minors.
