Stryker Orthopedics Sued Over Rejuvenate Hip Implant

Stryker Orthopedics has been hit with a product liability lawsuit that claims its Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implant systems were defective and led to patient injuries.

Dianne Pingel claims she had surgery in October 2011 to implant the Rejuvenate device and within months she began experiencing pain, according to The Record. The first hip replacement failed because of heavy metal corrosion.

To make matters worse, Pingel’s lawyer said that her femur was fractured when she underwent another surgery to remove abnormal tissue growing around the hip. She reportedly had to undergo further surgeries after suffering more complications and dislocated her hip at one point, according to The Record.

The Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implant systems were recalled “due to potential risks associated with modular neck stems. These risks include the potential for fretting and/or corrosion at or about the modular- neck junction, which may result in adverse local tissue reactions manifesting with pain and/or swelling,” according to Stryker in a statement on its website.

Stryker is just one of several medical device companies that have been sued over metal hip replacements. DePuy Orthopedics is one company that currently has hundreds of hip replacement lawsuits pending.
