The Center for Environmental Health (CEH) launched a product liability lawsuit against eight distributors and retailers of ginger and plum candies that were found to have high levels of lead.

Independent tests found that fourteen types of the Asian candies, sold by major retailers in ethnic groceries that exceed the limits of the Food and Drug Administration as well as the state, according to a CEH press release. One of the products contained nearly 100 times more lead than the legal limit under California’s Proposition 65 consumer protection law.

Lead exposure has been linked to higher rates of infertility in women, and an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure, among other health problems.

A recent study found that lead exposure during pregnancy could have “lasting and possibly permanent effects” on a child’s IQ, and another study showed that lead exposure during the first trimester had the most pronounced effects on a child’s mental development.
