Tobacco Companies Required to Report Hazardous Ingredients

The dangerous chemicals contained in tobacco products like smokeless chew and cigarettes will have nowhere to hide following a new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirement for tobacco companies to disclose the levels of all hazardous substances in their products.

This requirement is a part of the FDA’s latest preliminary guidance released last week to tighten regulation of the tobacco industry, according to the Associated Press. The new rules mark the first time tobacco manufacturers will be required to report the amounts of 20 chemicals that have been linked to lung disease, cancer, and other health problems. Some of the ingredients subject to the new guideline include carbon monoxide, ammonia, and formaldehyde.

"The law sets a high standard to make sure that tobacco products marketed to reduce risk actually reduce risk," said Dr. Lawrence Deyton, the director of FDA's tobacco center.

The FDA will also require the companies to show the data in a consumer-friendly format by next April.
