Executives of Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Orthopaedics unit have been called to testify in the multidistrict litigation faced by the company over its recalled metal-on-metal hip implants, reports Mass Device.

After several clinical studies revealed high failure rates and adverse reaction incidence rates, DePuy recalled its ASR Hip Resurfacing System as well as the ASR XL Acetabular System in 2010. The recall affected more than 96,000 patients.

More than 6,000 personal injury lawsuits filed against DePuy were consolidated under U.S. District Court Judge David Katz. Eight of the current and former top-level executives of DePuy -- including former president David Floyd and current president Andrew Ekdahl -- have to file depositions in the case, according to Mass Device.

The company has already settled the first of the 2,000 cases that were filed in state courts for $600,000.
