Zen Magnets Sued Over Magnetic Balls

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) filed a product liability lawsuit against Zen Magnets LLC. claiming its products contain defects in the design, packaging, warnings, and instructions, posing a danger to the public.

The product liability lawsuit claims that the product packaging does not properly warn of the hazard associated with the ingestion of the product. The complaint seeks an order that the company stops selling Zen Magnets Rare Earth Magnet Balls, notify the public of the defect and offer consumers a full refund, according to a CPSC press release.

The agency said that 11 manufacturers and/or importers of sets of small, powerful, individual magnets, all of which are made in China, have voluntarily agreed to its request to stop the sale of their products.

Zen magnets are powerful, chrome-plated, rare earth magnet balls about 5 millimeters in diameter that are made in China and sold online. When two or more magnets are swallowed, they can pinch or trap the intestinal walls to other digestive tissue between them resulting in acute and long-term health consequences.

Magnets that attract through the intestines result in progressive tissue injury and such conditions may lead to infection, sepsis and even death.
