Earn while you learn at sea

Warsash Maritime Academy – a part of Southampton Solent University and one of the world’s premier maritime training centres - is holding an open day on Friday 27 June 2013 (10am –3pm) to showcase the exciting study opportunities available to school and college leavers and those looking for a change of career.

The maritime industry is still one of the most important industries in the world, and shipping is a vital part of the UK economy. With 95% of the UK’s international trade arriving or leaving by sea, the shipping industry offers excellent career prospects and enables students to earn while they learn during training.

The Academy’s three-year cadet courses cover navigation (deck), engineering and electro-technical officer training. Course fees, with a salary or training allowance, are funded by shipping companies through sponsorship.

As well as information and talks on life as a deck or engineering officer, visitors will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be in a ship’s bridge and take a virtual walk through an engine room, on the Academy’s state-of-the-art simulators.

Visual displays by the Fire School will show how blazes are battled at sea and the maritime and offshore safety team will be demonstrating how a liferaft is inflated, as well as the deployment of distress flares.

Many of the major British shipping companies and recruitment and training representatives currently recruiting cadets and crew will attend to give information about the career opportunities that they can offer.  Shipping companies represented include Anglo Eastern UK, BP Maritime Services, Carnival UK, Chiltern Maritime, Clyde Marine Training, Deeside Crewing, Interior Yacht Services, Maersk Crewing Ltd, Princess Cruises, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, SSTG, Viking Recruitment and wilsonhalligan.

Director of Warsash Maritime Academy, Andrew Hair says: “Shipping is a global industry that offers sponsored training leading to real jobs and exciting careers.  It offers excellent prospects for those wanting to enter an exciting industry that beats the nine to five routine.”
