Two leading maritime institutions have joined forces to offer graduate courses to students in Malaysia. Maritime professionals graduating from the Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) in EduCity, Iskandar Malaysia can now pursue degree courses - undergraduate, post graduate and PhD level - from Southampton Solent University (SSU).

Under a co-operation agreement signed Wednesday 19 March 2014, NMIT diploma holders will be offered direct entry to SSU for internationally recognised graduate maritime qualifications.

The agreement also covers other areas of collaboration including: staff and student exchanges; new academic programme development; and joint research and consultancy.

NMIT President and Chief Executive Officer Professor Malek Pourzanjani and SSU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Mike Wilkinson signed the agreement at the NMIT City Campus at the Kotaraya Office Tower. Also present were Professor John Chudley, Dean of SSU’s Maritime and Technology Faculty and NMIT Founder, Captain Razali Yaacob.

“Our international strategy focuses on partnerships with leading institutions in Asia. Maritime is one of our core strategic sectors, so this initiative with NMIT is perfect for the development of Southampton Solent University and Warsash Maritime Academy in a fast-growing region with one of the world’s most important maritime industries,” says Professor Wilkinson.

This cooperation agreement, a first in the Malaysian maritime industry involving two private tertiary institutions, will offer excellent opportunities for Malaysian students seeking global maritime career opportunities.
“As part of our global engagement, NMIT has been on the lookout for internationally known and respected maritime institutions to develop partnerships with. We are very pleased to join hands with SSU in this endeavour today,” said Prof. Malek.

With decades of experience in maritime education and training, SSU is one of the highest ranking maritime education providers in the UK and overseas. Warsash Maritime Academy, which is part of SSU, provides first class education, training, research and commercial services to all maritime sectors worldwide.

"We are confident that this new agreement will enable NMIT to play a significant role in nurturing well-trained maritime professionals in Malaysia to meet increasing demand for industry experts worldwide,” said Capt. Razali.
