The 2012 legacy is set to continue with local schoolchildren benefitting from interactive workshops run by Southampton Solent University’s Sport Solent department on Tuesday 11 February.

Sport Solent’s team of coaches, Sports Leaders and students will be delivering the School Games Roadshow at Newlands Primary School from 9am to 3pm. This unique opportunity aims to inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more school sport in either competitive or ‘have a go’ format.

The roadshow is a great opportunity to highlight the fantastic community work taking place in the city and the partners who are involved in providing high quality sporting opportunities to young people.

Nationally the Sainsbury's School Games is being delivered through local partnerships supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), the Department for Education (DfE), the Department of Health (DH), Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust. Over £128m of Lottery and Government funding is being invested to maintain the initiative.

Following various competitions, an awards ceremony will take place during the closing assembly at 2.45pm where Councillor Ivan White, Mayor of Southampton, will present the winners.

The roadshow doesn’t only include sport however, selected pupils will be able to shadow Solent University students currently studying on BA (Hons) media culture and production, multimedia journalism, media production and photography degree courses.

Julia Tucker-Blackford, Schools and Colleges Partnership Manager for Sport Solent at Southampton Solent University says: “The ‘creative crew’ on the day will consist of young sports photographers and journalists who will take photographs and upload them to their school’s website.

“I am very excited about this new element of the roadshow and proud of Solent university students who have volunteered to inspire more young people to get involved in sport.”

Lee Page, Sport Solent’s Sport Development Officer says: “This event will allow young leaders who have recently completed the Sports Leaders UK course to put their newly learned skills into practice.”
