Opies’ helps Brighten up Butties for British Sandwich Week

Report this content

Fine food producer Opies are on a quest to help people brighten up their butties this British Sandwich Week by using their range of speciality pickles to cheer up a cheddar sandwich and revitalise a ham roll. Opies’ produce an array of interesting accompaniments like capers, gherkins and pickled walnuts that will all help to invigorate the humble sandwich.

Opies’ Cocktail Gherkins are hand-picked and carefully preserved in distilled malt vinegar. Their distinctive flavour means they go exceptionally well with a selection of meats and cheese. Naturally low in fat, gherkins are a healthy and crunchy alternative to help bulk up a butty. Here are Opies’ suggestions of how best to enjoy:

  • Meaty Pastrami – an American classic. Pastrami, gherkins, mustard on rye bread
  • Cheer Up Chicken – mix chicken breast with chopped gherkins, onions and mayonnaise. Add black pepper to taste.
  • Toasted Cheese – for a crunchy, tasty alternative to toasted cheese sandwiches add sliced gherkins, coriander (and a little chilli for a kick)
  • Roast Beef – mix gherkins, finely chopped red onion, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise and a little honey. Top roast beef and add lettuce for crunch.

Opies’ gherkins are readily available in Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Booths. RRP from £0.87 227g jar.

Pickled Walnuts are having something of a renaissance. Their popularity has been widely noted especially with celebrity chefs. Before Christmas John Torode plugged them on the BBC’s MasterChef programme and pickled walnuts went down a storm when tasted on Channel 5’s The Saturday Show. Use walnuts as an alternative to traditional pickles; serve sliced honey roast ham and a wedge of brie topped on granary bread before finishing with fresh salad and chopped Pickled Walnuts. Find Pickled Walnuts at Tesco, Sainsbury’s & Asda RRP from £2.49 390g.

Opies capers are carefully preserved in spirit vinegar. They are salty, super-tasty and add a depth of flavour to a sandwich filling so why not try them to make:

Tasty Tuna: mix tuna with parsley, lemon juice, capers & mayonnaise. Delicious on freshly baked wholemeal bread.

To Enliven Eggs: mix boiled eggs, finely chopped shallots, capers, fresh dill & mayonnaise. Add lettuce for crunch.

Smoked Salmon open sandwich – mix cream cheese, finely diced red onion, chopped capers and spread onto rye bread. Top with a generous serving of smoked salmon.
