Sproud becomes the first food brand in the world to receive ISO 26000 verification for its sustainability work
MALMÖ, SWEDEN - 04.04.23: Sproud (www.besproud.com), the Sweden-born maker of plant-based dairy alternatives made from yellow split peas, today announces that it has become the first food company in the world to be verified according to ISO 26000, an international standard focusing on corporate social responsibility (CSR).
The verification has been conducted by an accredited third party, VERIFY Agency of Sweden, which has reviewed Sproud’s sustainability and social responsibility efforts including through an on-site audit. As part of the verification process, Sproud has mapped out how its value chain aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and how Sproud can make the most impact through its business.
Sproud CEO Sara Berger comments: "At Sproud, we are proud to have our sustainability efforts verified and recognised, as sustainability is an integral part of our mission and business plan. We are dedicated to creating a future that is plant-based and sustainable, and this verification is a testament to our commitment.”
Producing food with the lowest possible kg CO2e/kg is a key driver in Sproud's sustainability work. For total transparency and measuring of its climate footprint, Sproud works with CarbonCloud (www.carboncloud.com), a third-party company that analyses the climate impact of products. For Sproud, this includes measuring the climate impact of every part of its production, from the fields and the specific ingredients used, through to the store shelves. Sproud’s climate footprint data is updated every two months on CarbonCloud to ensure that it shows the latest figures.
CarbonCloud shows that the kg CO2e/kg for Sproud’s products ranges between 0.26-0.38. This is lower than all the other market-leading brands in the wider plant-based alternative milk category.
Key to Sproud’s comparatively low CO2 footprint is its plant-based ingredients, including the yellow split pea; the production of which requires less land and water than oats, soy, and nuts. Additional contributing factors include new Tetra Pak packaging made from 88% plant-based material, a product shelf-life of 365 days, non-refrigerated transportation and distribution, and European production.
