SRV selected to develop EUR 500 million Tampere Central Deck and Arena project

Group of companies created by SRV has been selected to further develop the City of Tampere’s Central Deck and Arena project. The total value of the project, which includes a multi-purpose arena, offices, commercial premises, a hotel and housing, is EUR 500 million.

“This is a great day for SRV and we welcome with pride and pleasure the opportunity to take the Central Deck and Arena project forward. Now starts the development phase, in which financing and key lease agreements will be negotiated for a final investment decision and the main partners identified. This unique project, next to important transport links, is in line with our strategy as a developer of growth centres and it will enable our expertise in demanding hybrid projects to be displayed to the full,” says SRV’s Timo Nieminen, Executive Vice President, Project Development in Finland.

Negotiations with several investors interested in the project are continuing, and the final implementation decision will likely to be made in summer 2016. When implemented, the Central Deck and Arena project will create a completely new city district, an innovative centre for living, leisure and employment in Tampere inner city. In the first phase, a multi-purpose arena, three towers and a training hall are planned for a deck to be built over the southern passenger railway yard. In the second stage, a northern deck and an additional three towers will be built above the track. Overall, the project will consist of 120,000 square metres in floor area and more than one thousand housing units. The agreement includes also an option for 17 000 square meters floor area of residential building right in Ranta-Tampella. The intention is to begin the construction work of the southern deck and multi-purpose arena in spring 2017. According to the planned schedule, the first phase will be completed in summer 2020 and the entire complex will be ready in 2023.

The arena, which will be the new home of the Tappara and Ilves ice hockey teams, will be Finland’s biggest multi-purpose arena for sport and other events. In connection with the multi-purpose arena will be built a hotel, restaurants and other leisure facilities, which will promote cooperation with various partners.

“The Central Deck and Arena constitute a nationally significant project that will have a significant impact on employment and tax revenue in the Tampere Region and elsewhere in Finland. When implemented, the project will bring to Tampere around 3,600 jobs during the years of construction 2017–2025, namely around 440 jobs per year. Nationally the construction phase will create 6,300 jobs. After completion the project is expected to generate up to 3,600 new jobs in Finland. Visitors to events in the completed arena would generate up to EUR 25 million in added value for Tampere in the peak years. The Central Deck and Arena is the first and an important stage, which will launch extensive development of the area of Tampere railway station”, says Tero Tenhunen, Project Director, City of Tampere.
