SRV takes the lead as a project contractor from Sitra (Finnish Innovation Fund) in ecological building project located in Jätkäsaari district of Helsinki. New Airut eco-city block has been designed in a research project led by Sitra. Sitra will continue as a research and development partner and SRV will implement the project with VVO. It’s estimated that the city block will be completed by the end of 2015.

“Airut is a challenging but an interesting project. Combining sustainable development and profitability requires in-depth expertise in project development. We want to take the best ideas from the development and commercialize and reproduce them  - that’s the only way sustainability innovations will spread in our field. Success in this project requires good and committed co-operation partners, as Sitra, VVO and City of Helsinki for example”, says Timo Nieminen, Vice President of SRV.

The aspiration in designing Airut has been to minimize buildings impact on environment (in terms of toxicity and embodied carbon) and maximizing the energy efficiency of the block. In accordance with sustainable urban planning the total permitted building volume of 22.000 m2 is divided into a variety of different types of premises.

One goal of the research project has also been to develop new concepts and methods. Energy efficient and low carbon construction is the essential thing of the future and SRV seeks to be in first line to implement these new concepts.
