Topping out ceremony held at New Children’s Hospital

The construction of the New Children’s Hospital is progressing as planned, and the hospital has reached an important milestone – its topping out ceremony. The New Children’s Hospital’s topping out ceremony was held on Thursday, 30 March in Meilahti, Helsinki. The first half of the hospital will be completed for the installation of the user’s medical equipment in November 2017, and the rest of the hospital in June 2018. SRV is the project’s main contractor.

“The New Children’s Hospital is an excellent example of a challenging project in which open cooperation, careful advance planning and new solutions have helped achieve tight targets. Construction has gone well, and the project is progressing in accordance with set objectives, even though it has involved a tight schedule, overlapping planning and construction, and a restricted plot in the middle of a functioning hospital area,” says SRV’s Juha Toimela, Senior Vice President, Operations in Finland.

Excavation work began at the New Children’s Hospital in August 2014. Now an impressive façade covering, of which around one third has been completed, is being installed at the site. Inside the building, painting, tiling, floor covering and ceiling work, intermediate door and patient panel fittings as well as building systems work are under way.

“Particular successes to date have been the completion of the frame and the façade ahead of schedule from late summer 2016. With the selected implementation methods, the frame and the façade were quickly erected, enabling a faster start to be made on interior work, protected from the weather and moisture. The drying and quality of the structures has been measured and checked throughout construction,” says Site Manager Matti Julin.

Otherwise, the project has invested heavily in moisture and cleanliness management in order to achieve a safe and healthy work environment and end result, and tackling the shadow economy has also been an issue of particular focus. In addition, with an eye to the hospital’s future, the frame has been made flexible and adaptable, so that in the future interior spaces can be changed according to need. Currently, 265 people are working on the site. During the entire time of construction, a total around 3,000 people will work on the site.

The New Children’s Hospital will have eight floors above ground, a basement, and a machine room floor on the roof. The hospital will have within it a stunning 2,069 rooms, including 12 operating rooms, 16 intensive care units, 118 wards and 220 consultation or rehabilitation rooms.

SRV’s strong role as a hospital builder is reflected not only in the New Children’s Hospital, but also in other projects under way, such as the new building project in the front yard at TAYS Central Hospital in Tampere, Central Finland’s Hospital Nova in Jyväskylä, and the Kalasatama health and wellness centre in Helsinki. The total value of the several hospital and healthcare projects being built by SRV is currently EUR 650 million.
