A newly constructed apartment complex in Uppsala (Sweden), made with the most sustainable colour coated steel GreenCoat from SSAB, has been shortlisted for the Swedish Building Award 2017 (Stålbyggnadspriset 2017).

The apartment complex named Fjärilen (the butterfly), located in a new residential district in Uppsala, Sweden, was designed in order to link the different scales and appearances of the neighbouring city blocks. To achieve this, as well as to create an urban look, a façade and roof made from sustainable GreenCoat PLX Pro BT, from SSAB, was chosen.

The choice and use of material as well as the practical, yet modern approach to architecture has resulted in Fjärilen being shortlisted for the Stålbyggnadspriset 2017 award, presented by the Swedish Institute of Steel Construction.

“The use of GreenCoat in Fjärilen has supported us to fulfill both creative architectural designs as well as demanding building and environmental requirements,” says Rahel Belatchew, Belatchew Arkitekter AB, Stockholm.

Besides being well-known among tinsmiths and metal roofers for its easy hand forming and long colour retention, GreenCoat PLX Pro BT features a Bio-based Technology (BT) with a substantial portion of Swedish rapeseed oil instead of fossil based oils, which are traditionally used. The unique, patented BT solution by SSAB reduces the environmental footprint significantly.

GreenCoat Nordic quality colour coated products are highly resistant to corrosion, UV radiation as well as scratches. They provide building specifiers with a significantly lighter material compared to alternative solutions. GreenCoat also offers a lower temperature elongation than competitive materials for reduced buckling and a consistent shape, for decades to come.

“It is an honour to have been a part of this project that is now shortlisted for the award. During installation we experienced GreenCoat PLX Pro BT to be an easy material to handle and form when compared to other metals and even other colour coated products on the market. The quality of the finish stands out and experience tells that this will be the case for years to come,” confirms Robert Eriksson, Erikssons Plåt & Kopparslageri AB, Avesta.

The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction awards the bi-annual Stålbyggnadspriset (Swedish Building Award) to a construction project that uses steel in an innovative, sustainable and architecturally appealing way. The aim is to encourage efficient use of steel in construction and give rise to new ideas and inspirational solutions. The Swedish Building Award attracts architects, engineers and companies to use the properties of steel in order to help build a sustainable future.
