SSAB's new Brussels office supports the company's journey toward fossil-free steel production. The two-person office is part of the SSAB Governmental Relations team.

"SSAB's goal is to largely eliminate all carbon dioxide emissions from our own operations in around 2030 and to be the first in the world, to introduce, in 2026, commercial amounts of fossil-free steel to the market. EU-level policy and regulatory framework are important to us as a company now that we have made policy decisions to accelerate our green transition. I am happy to be able to strengthen SSAB's presence in Brussels with a new office and a two-person team," says SSAB Governmental Relations team leader Jesper Kansbod.

The office celebrated its official opening at the beginning of July. The opening ceremony discussed, e.g. the road map toward fossil-free steel, industrial policy, competitiveness and the conditions enabling industrial change. Around 70 people from different EU institutions, other companies and stakeholders were present at the opening.

The speakers at the event were
Torbjörn Haak, Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative of Sweden to the European Union
Antonios Sfakiotakis, Senior Specialist environmental issues & climate policy, Representation of Finland to the EU
Martin Pei, Executive Vice President and CTO, SSAB
Vesa Terävä, Head of unit, EU Green Deal, Secretariat-General, European Commission

"We are a pioneer in reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the steel industry. On our journey toward fossil-free steelmaking, we want to contribute to a transparent dialogue with stakeholders in Brussels on what is needed to secure a green and competitive European industry. We will continue to share our learnings and insights from our own transition journey, and hopefully be an inspiration to others,”  Kansbod says.
