Fewer transport trips and quicker construction. This is the vision opened by the semitrailer with concrete mixer that has been voted the best high strength steel design for 2007. Behind the design is the Spanish company Baryval Serviplem that has been awarded the Swedish Steel Prize 2007 for its work. The Prize was presented in conjunction with a gala dinner at the Berns Banqueting Hall in Stockholm on 29 November.

Comment of the jury:
In a world in which it is becoming increasingly clear that improved profitability cannot be achieved without consideration to people and the environment, the winner of the Swedish Steel Prize 2007 is a glowing example of innovative art of engineering. The winning design puts to use the various opportunities offered by high strength steels. The economic benefits go hand in hand with improvements to both the environment and the individual. We can see here a design that will be of great benefit to the market - a truly deserving winner of the Swedish Steel Prize 2007.

The Swedish Steel Prize is an international accolade aimed at highlighting innovative designs for which high strength steel is used. The Prize was founded by SSAB Tunnplåt and is awarded this year for the ninth time. Over the years, a total of around 500 designs from all corners of the world have been appraised by the competition jury.

”The clear trend is towards growing use of high strength steels, and designers are becoming increasingly adept at using the various opportunities offered by the steels,” explains Göran Carlsson, Chairman of the jury and Executive Vice President of SSAB. ”Baryval Serviplem, this year’s winner, has demonstrated this aptitude. The company has produced a design that may be of importance around the world. The new semitrailer can carry more load, is more profitable, is safer on the road, contributes to fewer transport trips and more efficient construction sites, and thereby reduced emissions.”

The Baryval Serviplem semitrailer with concrete mixer is made of high strength steel and is therefore almost 2 tonnes lighter. The weight saving has been achieved by the thinner material and a better design that was made possible due to the material used. The lower weight of the vehicle has enabled the load-carrying capacity to be increased correspondingly i.e. about 2 tonnes or 20 percent.

”The improvements achieved by Baryval Serviplem are excellent, and the company is a worthy winner of the Swedish Steel Prize,” continues Göran Carlsson. ”The company has won the Prize in very stiff competition. The general standard of the entries for the Swedish Steel Prize has been increasing year by year, and the entries of the four finalists are all of a very high standard. After the Swedish Steel Prize was founded almost ten years ago, the knowledge of high strength steels has increased substantially among designers around the world.

Entries for the Swedish Steel Prize can be made by anyone who uses high strength steels in his structures or has developed a method of working high strength steels. The Prize is awarded annually in conjunction with a gala dinner that concludes the Swedish Steel Prize days.

The other finalists who have been awarded runner-up prizes in the competition are:

- Dura Post from Australia that has developed a new, maintenance-free guide post.

- Liotard in cooperation with ArcelorMittal, both from France, for a new gas cylinder.

- Vossloh España for the development of a new locomotive for the transport of goods.
