The Swedish Steel Prize is awarded for innovative designs in high strength steels. The aim of the prize is to inspire and disseminate knowledge about high strength steels and the possibilities they provide to develop lighter, safer and more environmentally-friendly products.

The application period for Swedish Steel Prize 2012 has now begun and the final date for applications is August 15. The winner will be announced in November at a ceremony in Stockholm. The prize money is SEK 100,000.

‟We look forward to many new and interesting entries to this year's competition,” says KG Ramström, Chief Technical Officer at SSAB and chairman of the Swedish Steel Prize jury.

The Swedish Steel Prize is an international prize. Since the competition started in 1999, almost 700 entries have been submitted and the percentage of international contributions has increased over the years.

The winner in 2011 was the American company John Deere. The winning contribution was the company's harvester constructed of high strength steels which improves productivity and meets rigorous environmental requirements.

‟We assess the entries based on applicability, profitability, environmental improvement, performance enhancement, innovation, and competitiveness. The final date for applications is August 15, but the earlier entries are submitted the better, since they sometimes need to be supplemented,” says KG Ramström.

In addition to chairman KG Ramström, the jury consists of:

Lennart Bergqvist – Management consultant, LBQ Consulting
Sture Hogmark - Professor Emeritus in Materials Science and Tribology, Uppsala University
Claes Magnusson - Professor in Production Technology, Kristianstad University
Jan-Gunnar Persson – Professor Emeritus in Machine Design, Royal College of Technology
Jan-Olof Sperle - Professor i Lightweight Construction, Royal College of Technology and Uppsala University, Sperle Consulting
